Portland, Oregon filmmakers Alain LeTourneau and Pam Minty are committed to the survival and ongoing viability of 16mm film – a major format in avant-garde and experimental film history. Film Love welcomes LeTourneau and Minty to Atlanta to present their acclaimed 16mm documentary Empty Quarter and to discuss why, in a world gone mad for digital, 16mm still thrives among independent filmmakers.

In the long tradition of American landscape films, Empty Quarter is a portrait of southeast Oregon. A series of striking visual compositions contrast the region’s natural spaces with the mammoth industries that continually threaten to overwhelm them. Avoiding narration, letting the residents speak in their own voices, and giving the viewer time to take in the vast spaces on display, Empty Quarter is as wide-open as the landscapes it presents. It is a deeply sensitive portrait of a little-discussed but important region.

On November 7 at 489 Edgewood, the filmmakers will introduce and present Empty Quarter in its entirety, and answer questions on the film and their work. On November 8, they will appear at Emory University for an in-depth discussion on their work in and commitment to 16mm film. Film Love is proud to present LeTourneau and Minty in its ongoing series of visiting filmmaker events.
